Throughout the history of the world, discrimination has been a major concern in various public and private sectors. One of the major concerns often occurs in the workplace, gender pay gap, or gender inequality. This is considered as the average difference between the wages of women and men working. The issue of the gender pay gap reduces the lifetime earnings of women and also affects their pensions. As a result, it has become a significant cause of poverty in the life of several women.
In most workplaces across the United States and other countries across the world, women are often paid less as compared to men. Using the case “Gender Inequality: Why Women Are Paid Less than Men?”, this paper will analyze the concept of the gender pay gap in companies and industries around the world, provide reasons for the gender pay gap, and recommend policies that can be implemented to help reduce the inequality.
Provide a Summary of the Case Study
The case study provides an account of the gender pay gap that exists in various industries and companies across the globe. Women who may be equally trained, educated, and have a similar experience to those of their male counterparts, do not often get equal pay. It is noted from the case that in the USA when women and men attend a university, undertakes a similar course, and gets employed in a similar type of job, and it is estimated that women would still get 82 cents to every dollar that men earn.
The issue of the gender pay gap can be dated back for many years and often comes from traditional beliefs that since men support women and that women have the responsibility of caring for children and home, men, therefore, have higher efficiency in their careers.
In several parts of the globe, the average labor earnings of women are normally lower than those of men. Even though women have made huge steps in improving their educational achievements, especially in tertiary education, gender pay equity is still being experienced. There are two different types when it comes to the pay gap; the unadjusted and the adjusted pay gap.
The adjusted pay gap considers the differences in the number of hours worked, type of occupation, education level, and the experience in jobs. For instance, an individual who often takes time off such as maternity leave will likely not earn as much as one who does not take time off from work. Such kind of factors highly contributes to lower annual earnings for women. Even though the pay gap has reduced over time, the issue still exists.
Reasons for the Gender Pay Gap
The aspect of gender pay equity is something that has existed for as long as people worked for payment. Women are often paid lower than their male counterparts for doing the same job, even though they may have similar qualifications. Pay equity is caused by various issues. This often results from the manner in which the competency of women is treated as compared to their male counterparts (Lips, 2013).
